The Trail
Trail Hazards - Section by Section
Greymouth to Kumara
Some culverts in the coastal section do not contain side barriers.
Kumara to Milltown
There is no cellphone coverage for most of the ride.
When there is heavy rain The Weirs, just north of Cowboy Paradise can flood. When this happens currently the entire section from Old Christchurch Road to Milltown may be closed. Please check the homepage banner on this website of the trail Facebook Page for informaiton and updates.
Milltown to Hokitika
There is no cellphone coverage for most to this ride. Coverage exists at Lake Kaniere and from the Kaniere township near Hokitika.
The southern end of the Milltown Valley Road, north east of Lake Kaniere has narrow gravel corners where care is required.
Care should be taken along the Kaniere Water Race as most of this section is narrow with the water race on one side and a steep bank on the other.
Riders should take extreme care on the road section between Huranui Jacks and Kaniere township.
Normal road rules apply on the road sections. Keep left at all times. Some riders travelling from Hokitika to Lake Kaniere get confused by the yellow line on the road and ride out on the right hand side facing on coming cars. This is incorrect. Please remain on the left hand side.
Hokitika to Ross
Please take extreme care when crossing the Hokitika Bridge, expecially in windy conditions when walking is advised.
Extreme care is also required when crossing the State Highway from the Rotary Kiosk to the Mahinapua Bridge.
The Mahinapua Boardwalks are narrow and do not have barriers or a lip. Riders who are not confident should dismount and walk across these. If passing is required, please dismount and walk past other riders.
Riders travelling south will come out on the Woodstock- Rimu road. Due to the closure of the Totara Bridge riders may choose to finish their ride at this point or ride on down the Woodstock-Rimu Road to the West Coast Treetop Walk & Tower Zipline and on to Ross. If choosing to ride on, care is required on the Woodstock-Rimu Road and, if travelled, the State Highway down to Ross.
